Where Is Flores?

Flores is a long, mountainous island in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province, sitting east of Sumbawa and west of Timor. Labuan Bajo, the gateway to Komodo National Park, sits at its far western tip — but Flores itself is a distinct island with its own volcanic landscapes, ethnic groups and traditional architecture that has nothing to do with Komodo dragons.

Ruteng (Central-West)

A cool, highland town in Manggarai territory, known for the distinctive spider-web-shaped rice terraces at Cancar and as the usual jumping-off point for reaching Wae Rebo village.

Wae Rebo Village

A remote Manggarai settlement of cone-shaped thatched houses set in the highlands above Ruteng, reachable only by a multi-hour trek. It’s one of the most photographed traditional villages in Indonesia and one of the few places in the country where you can still stay overnight inside a traditional communal house.

Bajawa (Central)

The gateway to Ngada highland culture, surrounded by traditional villages including Bena, Luba, Wogo, Tololela and Gurusina. The area also has natural hot springs at Malanage and Mangeruda, and sits in the shadow of several active volcanoes.

Moni and Kelimutu (Central-East)

Moni is a small village that exists almost entirely to support sunrise visits to Kelimutu, Flores’ most famous natural attraction: three volcanic crater lakes that sit side by side, each a different color, and known to shift shade over time.

Ende (East)

A quieter port town with its own airport, notable as the site of Indonesian founding president Sukarno’s exile house and a small museum of local ikat weaving traditions.

Maumere (Far East)

The easternmost major stop on a typical Flores crossing, with its own airport and access to lesser-visited dive sites along the island’s north coast.

Kelimutu: Flores’ Most Famous Sight

Kelimutu’s three crater lakes are the single most iconic image of Flores outside of Komodo itself. Visitors typically arrive before dawn from Moni to watch the sunrise light up the lakes, which range in color from turquoise to deep red to near-black depending on mineral activity — and which have genuinely changed color over the years, adding to their mystique.

Wae Rebo and Traditional Villages

Beyond Wae Rebo, the Ngada villages around Bajawa (particularly Bena) offer a more accessible way to see traditional Florentine architecture and ceremonial sites without the multi-hour trek that Wae Rebo requires. If you only have time for one traditional village, choose Wae Rebo for the more immersive experience or Bena for the easier access.

The Trans-Flores Highway

The road connecting Labuan Bajo to Maumere is often called the Trans-Flores Highway, though “highway” oversells it — outside Labuan Bajo, roads are winding, mountainous and generally slower going than the map distance suggests. A full west-to-east crossing typically takes 4-7 days if you’re stopping at the main towns along the way, rather than trying to drive it in one push.

Most independent travelers hire a car with a driver rather than self-driving, since the roads are demanding and a local driver can also serve as an informal guide.

How to Get Around Flores

By Air

Three main airports serve the island: Labuan Bajo (LBJ) in the west, Ende (ENE) in the central-east, and Maumere (MOF) in the far east. Flying between these hubs is the fastest way to skip sections of the island if you don’t have time for the full overland route.

By Road

A hired car and driver is the standard way to cover the Trans-Flores route, typically arranged through a local operator or your hotel. Public bemos (minibuses) and ojek (motorbike taxis) exist but are slower and less practical for covering long distances with luggage.

By Sea

A ferry from Bali to Labuan Bajo exists but takes one to two nights and mainly appeals to travelers without a flexible schedule or a preference for overland/sea travel over flying.

If Komodo National Park is your main goal, three to five days built around Labuan Bajo is enough. If you want to see the rest of the island’s highlands and villages, budget at least a week, and fly back from Ende or Maumere rather than backtracking overland to Labuan Bajo.

Best Time to Visit Flores

The dry season, roughly April through October, is the easiest time to travel overland across Flores, with more reliable road conditions and clearer views at Kelimutu. April-June and September-November tend to be cooler and less crowded than the July-August peak. The wet season (November-March) brings a higher chance of landslide-related road delays in the highlands, on top of the rougher seas that affect Komodo boat trips during the same period.

Away from Labuan Bajo, Flores is considerably cheaper than the Komodo boat-trip economy — hired cars and drivers, homestays and local meals in the highlands cost a fraction of what a liveaboard or resort stay runs. Practical Tips for Traveling Flores

• Bring cash — ATMs are scarce outside Labuan Bajo, Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende and Maumere.
• A driver-guide is worth the cost outside Labuan Bajo; the highland roads are slow and signage is limited.
• Book the Wae Rebo trek in advance through a Ruteng-based operator, since daily visitor numbers are limited.
• Pack layers — highland towns like Bajawa and Ruteng are noticeably cooler than coastal Labuan Bajo.
• Arrive at Kelimutu well before sunrise; the viewpoint gets crowded and cloud cover can roll in later in the morning.
• Don’t try to cover the whole island in fewer than 6 days — the roads are slower than distances suggest.
