Flores Itinerary: How to Plan 7 to 10 Days on the Island

← Home

Flores rewards travelers who give it more than a Komodo day trip, but the island is long and the roads are slow, so a good itinerary depends on pacing rather than trying to see everything. This guide lays out a 7-day route covering the essentials and a 10-day extension for travelers who want to add Riung’s islands and more time in the highlands.

If you’re still deciding how much of the island to cover, our Flores travel guide breaks down the regions and how long each realistically needs.

Quick Answer: The Best Flores Itinerary

  • Days 1-2: Labuan Bajo — Komodo National Park boat trip
  • Day 3: Travel to Ruteng, visit Cancar rice fields
  • Day 4: Trek to Wae Rebo, overnight in the village
  • Day 5: Return to Ruteng, travel to Bajawa
  • Day 6: Bajawa — Ngada villages and hot springs
  • Day 7: Travel to Moni, sunrise at Kelimutu, fly out from Ende or continue to Maumere

This assumes you fly into Labuan Bajo and out of Ende or Maumere rather than backtracking — booking a one-way overland route saves a full extra day compared to returning to Labuan Bajo.

Before You Start: Fly One Way

The single most important planning decision is not doubling back. Fly into Labuan Bajo (LBJ) and out of Ende (ENE) or Maumere (MOF) instead of returning to Labuan Bajo at the end of your trip. Flights between these airports and Bali or Jakarta run regularly, and backtracking overland the way you came wastes 2-3 days you could otherwise spend on the island.

Day 1: Arrive in Labuan Bajo

Fly into Komodo Airport, settle into your hotel and use the afternoon to explore the harbor and town, or catch sunset from one of the nearby viewpoints. Confirm your boat trip for the following day if you haven’t already booked it.

Day 2: Komodo National Park

A full-day speedboat trip covering Padar Island, Pink Beach and either Komodo or Rinca Island for the dragon trek. See our Komodo boat tour guide for how to choose between a day trip and a liveaboard if you want to extend this part of the trip instead of moving on.

Day 3: Travel to Ruteng

The drive from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng takes roughly 4-5 hours through mountainous terrain. Break up the journey with a stop at the Cancar spider web rice fields just outside Ruteng, ideally timed for good light in the late afternoon.

Day 4: Trek to Wae Rebo

An early departure from Ruteng to Denge village, followed by a roughly three-hour jungle trek up to Wae Rebo. Spend the night in one of the traditional Mbaru Niang houses, sharing a meal with the community — this is the highlight of the overland route for most travelers, so don’t rush it.

Day 5: Return to Ruteng, Travel to Bajawa

Trek back down to Denge in the morning, then continue by road to Bajawa, another 4-5 hour drive through the highlands. Arrive in the late afternoon with time to settle in before dinner.

Day 6: Bajawa — Ngada Villages and Hot Springs

Spend the day visiting the traditional Ngada villages around Bajawa, particularly Bena, along with a stop at the Malanage or Mangeruda hot springs. Travelers with an extra day and a good level of fitness can add a pre-dawn climb of Mount Inerie instead of the villages, though this requires swapping out most of the day’s other plans.

Day 7: Travel to Moni, Sunrise at Kelimutu

Drive from Bajawa to Moni (around 4 hours), arriving in the afternoon with an early night ahead of a pre-dawn Kelimutu departure the following morning — or, if timing allows, push on the same day for a sunset viewing instead of sunrise. From Moni, it’s a short onward drive to Ende for your departure flight, or continue further to Maumere if you have extra days.

10-Day Extension: Add Riung and Maumere

With three extra days, you can slow the pace and add two destinations most 7-day itineraries skip entirely.

Day 8: Riung’s 17 Islands

A detour north from the main route to Riung, for snorkeling among the marine park’s uninhabited islands and a much quieter alternative to Komodo’s crowds.

Days 9-10: Maumere

Continue east to Maumere for Koka Beach, the Nuabari megalithic villages and some lesser-visited north-coast diving before flying out from Maumere airport (MOF).

How to Get Around This Itinerary

A hired car with a driver is the standard way to cover this route — self-driving isn’t practical for most visitors given the winding mountain roads and limited signage. Arrange your driver in Labuan Bajo before setting out, ideally for the whole route rather than switching drivers at each town, so they can double as an informal guide along the way.

Best Time to Follow This Itinerary

The dry season, roughly April through October, makes the overland driving days considerably easier and gives you the clearest views at Kelimutu. See our best time to visit Komodo guide for how the Komodo portion of the trip specifically lines up with the seasons.

What to Skip If You’re Short on Time

If 7 days isn’t possible, drop Bajawa before Wae Rebo — the Ngada villages are worthwhile but more replaceable than the Wae Rebo trek, and skipping them turns this into a workable 5-day Labuan Bajo-to-Kelimutu route.

Flores Itinerary FAQ

How many days do I need for Flores?

Seven days covers the essentials from Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu. Ten days allows a more relaxed pace plus Riung and Maumere.

Should I fly back to Labuan Bajo or fly out from the east?

Fly out from Ende or Maumere. Backtracking overland to Labuan Bajo wastes days you could spend seeing more of the island.

Is Wae Rebo worth the detour?

Yes — it’s consistently the highlight of the overland route for travelers who make time for it, and one of the few places in Indonesia offering an overnight stay in a traditional communal house.

Can I do this itinerary without a driver?

It’s difficult. Public transport exists but is slow and impractical for covering this much ground with a fixed schedule, so most travelers hire a car and driver for the full route.

What should I cut if I only have 5 days?

Drop the Bajawa stop and go straight from Wae Rebo toward Kelimutu, or skip Wae Rebo and focus on Labuan Bajo plus Kelimutu if the trek isn’t a priority.
