June 2027 opens the dry season across most of Indonesia and brings a mix of national observance and regional culture, from Pancasila Day and the Islamic New Year to two of the country’s most distinctive local festivals: the Tabuik processions of West Sumatra and the start of Bali’s month-long Arts Festival.

It is also roughly when East Bali’s Tenganan village holds its famous Pandan War, one of the few Balinese rituals that predates mainstream Hindu-Balinese culture on the island.

June 1: Pancasila Day

Pancasila Day marks the anniversary of a 1945 speech by Indonesia’s founding president, Sukarno, in which he first articulated Pancasila, the five foundational principles that still underpin Indonesia’s constitution and national identity today.

Although it only became an official national holiday in 2016, Pancasila Day is now observed with flag ceremonies at schools and government offices nationwide. For most travelers it functions primarily as a quiet public holiday rather than a major visible celebration.

The Islamic New Year, or Muharram, is a quiet national public holiday marked mainly by religious reflection rather than public festivities in most of the country.

The dramatic exception is Pariaman, on the west coast of West Sumatra, where the ten-day Tabuik Festival builds toward Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram. Local communities construct enormous bamboo and paper towers shaped like a buraq, a mythical winged creature, over the preceding days.

On the final day, teams of men carry the towers on their shoulders through town in a shaking, chanting procession before wading into the sea and casting the structures into the waves, a tradition held annually since 1831 to commemorate the deaths of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandsons Hasan and Husain.

Pariaman is reached via a short drive from Minangkabau International Airport near Padang, making it a feasible day trip or overnight add-on for travelers already exploring West Sumatra.

Mid-June (Date TBA): Bali Arts Festival Opens

The Bali Arts Festival, known locally as Pesta Kesenian Bali, is the island’s largest annual celebration of traditional and contemporary Balinese arts, running from mid-June through mid-July at Denpasar’s main cultural venue.

The month-long program includes hundreds of performances of traditional dance forms such as Barong and Kecak, gamelan competitions between villages and regencies, craft and textile exhibitions, and a large opening parade.

The festival closes with an elaborate Sendratari dance-drama performance. Because the provincial government sets each year’s exact dates and theme only a few months in advance, travelers planning a June or July trip to Bali around the festival should check for updated 2027 dates closer to their travel window.

Mid-June (Date TBA): Mekare-Kare (Pandan War) in Tenganan

Tenganan is one of Bali’s oldest Bali Aga villages, home to communities whose customs predate the Hindu-Javanese influence found in most of the island. Its most famous ritual is Mekare-kare, commonly called the Pandan War.

Young men fight in pairs using bundles of sharp-thorned pandan leaves and rattan shields, deliberately scratching each other’s backs as a ritual offering to Dewa Indra, the god of war. Despite the intensity, there are no winners or losers, and fighters embrace after each round.

The battles conclude with fighters tending each other’s wounds with a traditional turmeric-based remedy and sharing a communal meal, and the ritual is typically held over two days as the centerpiece of the village’s annual ceremonial calendar.
