The centerpiece is the Tatung procession: hundreds of participants, believed to be possessed by protective spirits, are carried through the streets on spiked palanquins and perform feats such as piercing their cheeks with skewers, all as part of a ritual said to demonstrate spiritual protection.

In the days leading up to the main procession, the city also holds ritual street-cleansing ceremonies, dragon processions at local temples, and a lantern parade the night before Cap Go Meh itself.

The event draws participation and audiences from Singkawang’s Chinese, Dayak and Malay communities alike, and is widely considered one of Indonesia’s most visually striking cultural festivals. Singkawang is reachable from Pontianak, the main gateway city in West Kalimantan, by a road trip of a few hours, so travelers usually base themselves in Pontianak or Singkawang itself for the festival.
