Indonesia Events in July 2027: Jember Fashion Carnaval and Bali Kite Festival

← Home

July 2027 has no national public holidays in Indonesia, but it is one of the best months to see the country’s living culture up close, from East Java’s elaborate Jember Fashion Carnaval to the giant traditional kites that fill Bali’s skies as the dry season winds pick up.

It is also the peak of the dry-season funeral season in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi, when the region’s famous Rambu Solo ceremonies are held in the greatest numbers.

Below is our guide to the most interesting and useful events taking place across Indonesia in July 2027.

Indonesia Events in July 2027 at a Glance

Date Event Location Type
Late July (date TBA) Jember Fashion Carnaval Jember, East Java Fashion and Costume Carnival
July-August (date TBA) Bali Kite Festival Padang Galak Beach, Sanur, Bali Traditional Kite Festival
Throughout July Rambu Solo Funeral Season Peak Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi Cultural and Religious Ceremony Season

Late July (Date TBA): Jember Fashion Carnaval

Location: Central Park, Jember, East Java
Date: Historically late July; the 2026 edition ran July 24-26. Exact 2027 dates not yet announced
Type: Fashion and costume carnival

The Jember Fashion Carnaval is one of Indonesia’s most visually spectacular events, drawing comparisons to Rio’s Carnival for the scale and imagination of its costumes.

More than 2,500 participants, mostly local youth, spend months hand-building elaborate, often towering costumes around an annual theme, then parade them along a 3.6-kilometer runway through the city’s streets in front of huge crowds.

Each year’s edition carries a distinct theme reflecting cultural, social or environmental ideas, reimagined through the carnival’s maximalist costume design, and the event now attracts visitors and media attention from well beyond East Java.

Jember is reachable by flight from Surabaya or a longer overland journey from other East Java cities, so travelers planning specifically around the carnival should confirm the 2027 dates and book accommodation early once announced.

July-August (Date TBA): Bali Kite Festival

Location: Padang Galak Beach, Sanur, East Denpasar, Bali
Date: Held on weekends during the windy season, typically July through October; exact 2027 dates not yet announced
Type: Traditional kite festival

The Bali Kite Festival has spiritual roots: kites were traditionally flown as offerings to the Hindu gods in thanks for a good harvest, and the tradition has since grown into one of the island’s most photogenic annual events.

Teams representing villages across Bali compete with three main kite types: the fish-shaped bebean, the long-tailed, dragon-like janggan, and the leaf-shaped pecukan, some of which stretch up to 10 meters long and require dozens of people to launch.

Beyond the kite competitions themselves, the beachfront atmosphere includes gamelan music, traditional dress and a strong community feel, with free admission for spectators.

Throughout July: Rambu Solo Funeral Season in Tana Toraja

Location: Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi
Date: Peak season is July and August, within the broader June-September dry season window
Type: Cultural and religious ceremony season

Rambu Solo is the elaborate, days-long funeral ceremony of the Toraja people, involving buffalo and pig sacrifices, processions, and ritual feasting, and is considered one of the most significant events in Torajan life.

Families traditionally hold these ceremonies after the harvest is complete and when livestock prices are stable, which is why the dry season, and July and August specifically, sees the highest concentration of ceremonies and visiting travelers each year.

Because these are genuine family funerals rather than staged tourist events, visitors should only attend with a local guide who can arrange a respectful invitation, dress conservatively, and bring an appropriate small gift such as cigarettes or sugar as is customary.

July 2027 Events in Indonesia: Important Note

Both Jember Fashion Carnaval and the Bali Kite Festival follow calendars whose exact 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing. Check the carnival’s official channels and Bali’s local event listings closer to your travel dates.

Rambu Solo ceremonies are private family events, not scheduled public festivals, so there is no fixed calendar to check. Arrange a visit only through a reputable local guide or tour operator who has an existing relationship with a hosting family.

If you are planning a boat trip to Komodo National Park, July falls in the heart of the dry season and typically offers reliable, calm sailing conditions.
