Rambu Solo is the elaborate, days-long funeral ceremony of the Toraja people, involving buffalo and pig sacrifices, processions, and ritual feasting, and is considered one of the most significant events in Torajan life.

Families traditionally hold these ceremonies after the harvest is complete and when livestock prices are stable, which is why the dry season, and July and August specifically, sees the highest concentration of ceremonies and visiting travelers each year.

Because these are genuine family funerals rather than staged tourist events, visitors should only attend with a local guide who can arrange a respectful invitation, dress conservatively, and bring an appropriate small gift such as cigarettes or sugar as is customary.
