Mount Rinjani reopens today to hikers on all five trails after the Senaru route came back online on October 3, 2026, following a forest fire that had closed it along with the Torean trail since late September.
For planning a wider trip around the reopened trek, see this Lombok travel guide.
What happened
A wildfire that started around September 22 near Torean burned roughly 1,098 hectares on Mount Rinjani, forcing authorities to close the Senaru and Torean trails. After the blaze was declared extinguished, the Senaru trail reopened on Saturday, October 3, 2026, restoring access to all five of Rinjani’s hiking routes.
What’s changed for hikers
Online trail registration is still required before you climb, and authorities are using drone patrols to monitor the mountain and catch any reignition early. If you had to cancel or postpone a Rinjani trek because of the September closures, all routes are now bookable again.
What it means for your trip
If you’re planning a Rinjani climb as part of a wider Lombok itinerary, register online in advance as usual, check current trail status close to your travel date since conditions can change quickly in this kind of terrain, and expect continued monitoring measures (drones, patrols) around the mountain as a precaution. Many hikers base themselves in Senggigi or Kuta Lombok before and after the trek.
