The Baliem Valley Festival is one of Indonesia’s most remarkable cultural events, bringing together the Dani, Lani and Yali tribes of the Papua highlands for several days of traditional ceremonies rarely seen outside the region.

The centerpiece is a series of staged mock tribal wars, with warriors in traditional dress, including the iconic koteka, performing choreographed battles with bows, arrows and spears that reenact historic inter-tribal conflicts.

The festival also features a Barapen, or traditional stone-cooked feast, in which pork and vegetables are prepared using heated stones buried in the ground, along with pig races and traditional dance performances.

Wamena is reached only by air, typically via a flight from Jayapura, and the remoteness of the region means travelers should book flights and a local guide well in advance, especially during the festival period.

Throughout August, and especially in the days around the 17th, neighborhoods hold lomba (competitions) including panjat pinang, a greased-pole climbing contest for prizes, krupuk-eating races with hands tied behind the back, sack races, tug-of-war and decorated bicycle parades.
