Kartini Day marks the birthday of Raden Ajeng Kartini, a Javanese noblewoman born in 1879 who became a pioneering advocate for women’s education and rights at a time when girls in her social class were expected to enter isolation after age twelve and marry young.

Kartini educated herself through books and correspondence with Dutch friends, and her writings on gender equality, published after her early death, went on to shape Indonesia’s early women’s movement. The day has been officially observed since 1964.

Although it is not a public holiday, Kartini Day is widely marked across the country. Schoolgirls and female teachers wear kebaya and selendang, the traditional blouse and shawl associated with Kartini, and schools hold cooking contests, fashion shows and drawing competitions celebrating women’s achievements.

Travelers in Indonesia on April 21 will most likely notice the celebrations at schools, in the local news, and occasionally at hotels or offices where staff dress in kebaya for the day, rather than through any single public event.
